Vembanad Lake, Kochi
One thing that will truly amaze you about Kerala is its cultural vibrance and diversity. This South Indian state is a paradise of socio-cultural events and art forms that have mesmerised the world. ‘Vallamkali’ (Boat race) is such a visual spectacle that will leave you stunned no matter how many times you have witnessed it. Such is the fervor and frenzy that it generates. Indira Gandhi Boat Race in Ernakulam is one of the top in this league, that attracts crowds from even far away places.
Organised in memory of Indira Gandhi who was the 3rd Prime Minister of India, this water sport and festival is celebrated colourfully every year in the city during the last week of December. Setting the backwaters on fire, 16 teams participate in this event for the Indira Gandhi Trophy that is considered highly prestigious. Around 125 to 150 oarsmen will be a part of every team. There will be singers and helmsmen in every team. The charged-up oarsmen would row Chundan Vallams (Snake boats) in great speed, to the rhythm of traditional songs known as “Vallapattu”. It is a sight to behold and experience to enjoy as you see these boats creating magic on waves.
