The story of Ernakulam can never be told without the contributions of the Christian community to the overall socio-cultural and economic development of the district. The community has been prevalent in the region for many centuries, which has also led to the establishment of various churches in the district. One of the most iconic of those is the St. George Forane Church in Edapally. The church is one of the iconic buildings in the city and is a much revered place of worship.
One of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Kerala, the church is popularly known as Edapally Palli in the region. It is believed to have been constructed around 594 AD as a relatively smaller structure. In 1080 AD, a bigger church was built next to the existing one as the congregation grew in number. As time passed by, the church went through several renovations and modifications. Today, the church is a magnificent and imposing structure that towers with all its grandeur. The altar is grand, behind which there is a classic painting of heaven. “Edapally Perunnaal” is the annual festival that is celebrated in the church. Fourty hours of devotion marks the commencement of the festival and is attended by devotees from far and wide.
