Paradesi Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue, also known as the Jewish Synagogue

Sometimes, it is hard to believe how far people have travelled across the world in the past, establishing settlements seas away from their motherlands. This feeling of incredibleness is what welcomes you to the Fort Kochi – Mattancherry locale in Ernakulam district. You will be amazed by the different ethnicities of people who call the area their home, especially Jews. Their stories have been well documented and their legacy on Kochi’s cultural space is priceless. The Paradesi Synagogue, also known as the Jewish Synagogue in Mattancherry aptly reflects this.

The word ‘Paradesi’ means foreigner. The Synagogue is a magnificent monument that houses a rare and unique collection of antiques from the bygone eras. The architectural splendour of the building is something worth lauding and adds matchless grandeur to the building. The synagogue is a testimony to the contributions of the Jewish community to the cultural fabric of the region.

First built in 1568., the Synagogue was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1662. It was reconstructed a couple of years later by the Dutch. The huge central hall, grand pillars, large open windows, glass chandeliers, lamps, ceramic floor tiles – you will for sure be stunned by the beauty of this marvel. The Synagogue also contains many rare possessions that would be of great interest to history lovers.
